Having a Bachelor's degree will barely get you in the door at most places. I don't see an Associate's degree as being worth much unless it is in a skilled trade. Just my observation.

Major schools will need a bailout.

When I think of Community Colleges, I think of long lines and uninterested people that are supposed to be there to help you. Take WCC for instance. Every time I have ever been to the student office, they are very non helpful, and you know why? They have a guaranteed job, and do not care if you get help or not. I once waited an hour to see a counselor, and the sad part about it was I overheard her talking about planning a baby shower to someone on the phone for 30 minutes. I can promise you of community colleges become tuition free, you will see the larger universities try to make it harder on kids to get into their front doors. It's a good idea on paper, but that's about it.

Government involvement is the reason the cost of increased in the first place. I paid for my nephews community college tuition back in the late 90's 15 hours a semester, less than 650 dollars a term.

Same school today, oh wait they upgraded themselves to a state college so they could profit off the federal aid programs. and rasie the tuition to the state schools level They also set up a state credit Union at the school to receive the aid directly from the feds. Even in the 90's most 70% or so of the kids got aid from the feds at the community level.

This is the same as ebt, just a scam for business to profit off the tax payers.

I have a degree and work in what use to be a professional occupation. I make slightly above the average salary. BUT when I compare what I made working in furniture in 1992 and allow for inflation I make about the same as I did on production line at Broyhill.

The difference I spent $35,000 for college to make the same as I did with a HSD.

I have a brother who drives a truck with 30 years behind the wheel. He makes almost double what I do and he never finished HS.

Builder and developer I went to school with both never finished. They both make $150,000 plus a year.

Same for the guy that runs his own septic tank pumper. Never finished and makes double what I do per year.

College and education are great. I think the community college free is a great idea.

It is all in what the person wants. Those who seem to be self starters and independent seem to do far better with or without a college degree.

Vega, I actually do know how long my child's teacher spends at school. I also know if she's spending 60 hours a week working then she has HORRIBLE time management skills. I'm not against teachers. I'm just being realistic.

Exactly! Overall, yet not in EVERY case, you need at least a Bachelors to get anything with a decent wage. I'm not saying you'll be rolling in dough, but more likely you'll be able to live comfortably within reasonable means and not need help from the almighty government. Then a Masters degree would be even better and perhaps more preferred here within the next 10 years.

Mommo, if you really knew the true hours a teacher worked, you would feel different. Do you really think their work ends after spending 8-9 hours a day in the school building? Papers have to be graded, tests written, and lesson plans finished. Some teachers obviously work different hours based upon the demands of their curriculum but I know very few that put in less than 60 hours per week.

We, in NC, pay a new teacher pennies compared to other countries. Pay someone cheap and you'll get someone who does cheap work.

We aren't in other countries. We are in America so shouldn't their salary be in comparison with other occupations in America? They are not paid "cheap" considering their hours, etc. If they are doing "cheap" work, then replace them.

If it were handled properly, then yes I think it might be a good idea. I just doubt very seriously it would be handled properly. I think if community college is available free of charge to every student, then the next step would be to evaluate the financial aid given to attend elsewhere (at least for the first two years).

Would somebody please explain to me how is this "free". Every time I hear the government say something is free my arse automatically goes into pucker mode because I know somebody is going to get reamed and its usually the US tax payer.
